The Ultimate History of the Boeing B17 Bomber The Boeing B-17 ‘Flying Fortress' has come to symbolize the United States' contribution to the air war in Europe during the Second World War. From 1943 until the end of the war, the Flying Fortresses of the Eighth Air Force became a familiar site over Eastern England as they set off on yet another daylight raid, often deep into the heart of Nazi Germany. Many never returned for thousans of men were killed or wounded during these raids.

German Frontier - The Bridge at Remagen By late 1944, the Western Allies were infected with the over-confidence that flowed from the sweeping victories they had gained since the Breakout from Normandy and that by December had carried them to the very borders of the Third Reich. They were confident that the war would soon be over, but they were sadly mistaken. On December 16, German forces launched a massive attack through the Ardennes, the opening blows of Operation Watch on the Rhine, known to history as the Battle of the Bulge.

The mid 1930's saw Germany rebuilding her fleets, defying the Versailles Treaty as Hitler planned to encircle Britain with his Kriegsmarine. Within hours of war's declaration, a U-boat had claimed its first victim in an underwater reign of terror that struck merchantmen and warship alike. By April 1940, Germany had sunk one million tons Of Allied shipping. The entrance of Mussolini's Italy shifted the balance of power in the Mediterranean. However the course of Naval warfarewas changed in 1941 when torpedo bombers from HMS illustrious decimated the Italian fleet at anchor in Taranto, crippling three of their battleships in the first Allied victory since the fall Of France.
