До появления немецких "Тигров" и "Пантер" танк КВ был королем поля битвы. Однако вскоре советская армия утратила качественное превосходство в бронетехнике. Достойным ответом немецким конструкторам стал танк ИС-2, который явился дальнейшим развитием танков серии КВ. ИС-2 по разным параметрам как превосходил "Тигр", так и отставал от него. Однако в отличие от немецких супер-машин танки ИС были более универсальными. Если в конце войны "Тигры" использовались в основном как противотанковое средство, то танки ИС-2 применялись во всех общевойсковых операциях и использовались как оружие наступления и разрушения обороны противника.
